The Story of the Negroni
The Negroni, a timeless classic, was created between 1919 and 1920 in Florence by Count Camillo Negroni. The count, a regular at the aristocratic Caffè Casoni in Via de’ Tornabuoni, had had enough of the usual Americano and asked barman Fosco Scarselli to use gin instead of soda – inspired by his recent trips to London. What became the Count’s ‘usual’ order was soon called ‘An Americano in the style of Count Negroni’.
The result was a cocktail that not only bore the name of its inventor, but also achieved worldwide fame. In the 1950s, the Negroni first conquered Italy and then the whole world. It even found its place in pop culture when it was mentioned in one of the novels in Ian Fleming’s James Bond series, ‘Risk’, where the legendary Agent 007 orders a Negroni during a visit to Italy.
